This is the story of how Aunt Mia's Sweets / The Gourmet Cookie Shoppe got started............
We cater birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, bridal showers, weddings, retirement parties, any and all special events. Our Orangeburg NY gourmet bakery serves Bergen County New Jersey & Rockland County New York.
When I was a kid and even to this day, everything we did was discussed or done in the kitchen. The kitchen was our home base for everything, so its no wonder I loved to cook and bake. So when I grew up and finally got my own kitchen I put a TV in it and I would stay in there all day cooking cooking cooking and having my favorite shows in the background, was, to me, heaven.
In 2008 I created a cookie recipe on a bet. Yes a bet, my husband bet me I couldn’t make a black and white cookie like the one they sold down the street in a neighborhood deli. Well, of course I took the bet worked for weeks on a recipe trying many…. After many batches of cookies I finally created the perfect dough and …Wala the black and white cookie was born. (I won the bet... He said they were better.)
I started making them for friends and family and before I knew it I was getting requests for them. My friend, who is a chef, gave me a container of raspberry paste from a company, that at the time, only he could order for me, and said “I bet you can make something with this”. (Again another bet….Geesh). And Wala the raspberry chocolate chip was born. That’s when things start to get fuzzy…lol. Before I knew it I was creating more flavors.
In the summer of 2010 decided that I was going to sell my cookies on a part time basis just to see where it goes. So I rented a commercial kitchen and started taking orders. I loved it, I was making deliveries and doing vendor events at night and on the weekends. Seeing peoples faces after eating one of my cookies, to me, was priceless. That is when I knew this is what I wanted to do.
So in 2011 with the amazing support of my husband, my friends and my family I decided to quit my office manager job of 17 years and start my own business. I was so scared and excited all at the same time it was so crazy. Looking for space, designing a store, and figuring out all I needed to do. My head spun around for months, leaving my job was a really big deal for me. I knew that I had to follow my dream.
Now it needed a name and a face.
My niece told me there was no way I could start a cookie company and not call it Aunt Mia’s - my nickname since my nieces and nephews were babies. (a long long time ago. LOL)
I started to Google how to start my own business, how to decorate a cake, I watched You Tube videos on decorating as well as taking a Wilton class.
I am so happy to say on February 14, 2012 I opened my doors and soon after had a Grand Opening. This is what I have been dreaming about my very own commercial kitchen with a big ole TV mounted to the wall … I was and still am in heaven.
This has been such a truly wonderful experience for me and I could not have done it without the love and support of my family and friends. I am surrounded by the most amazing people and for that I am the most grateful.
